WD My Cloud Issues / MacBook Incredibly Slow

Hi all, I have never used this forum but I’m hoping someone can help me. I have been using WD my cloud devices for years. When I went from windows to MacBook a while back, I noticed that there was a big change in the way they work.

For whatever reason the MacBook has a very hard time accessing files. It’s very slow copying. It will literally freeze. It just does all kinds of weird stuff. The crazy thing is that if I use my iphone or my iPad, the files are accessed a lot quicker. All of them are using Wi-Fi to access the cloud device. I just don’t know if I should switch to another type of hard drive or if it’s just the MacBook.

The WD my cloud sits upstairs right above my bedroom. But even at my other house, this was a problem so I don’t think it’s Wi-Fi related. I feel like I am forgetting something. I also have not used the WD software that you can download because I heard that it makes it a lot worse. And if I recall, I did have problems with it back when I tried to use it. Would appreciate any help.

Thank you!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 15.6

I suspect the My Cloud was never setup properly for your Mac. If that is the case then please use Google and search for "WD My Cloud Mac Setup" and you can find the proper instructions. What I think you may have skipped is installing the WD Discovery app on the Mac. Please refer to:

Accessing files on your Mac

  • Using the WD Discovery app: After the initial setup, you can install the WD Discovery app to access your device directly in Finder, similar to a local drive. The app can also be used to sync files to your My Cloud.
  • Using Finder: Once set up, you can also access your My Cloud from Finder by going to Go > Connect to Server and entering the device's network path. Note that newer OS5 devices do not support the older Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) and instead use a different protocol.

also:

If you have a My Cloud Home

  1. Connect the device to your router and power it up. Wait for the light to turn solid white.
  2. Go to mycloud.com/hello on any browser or device.
  3. Create your account and link it to the device by using the 9-digit device code found on the device or the quick install guide if prompted.

Thank you so much. I think you're right. I went and addressed those areas. Also, when I went into Connect to Server, it turned out I had use a type of shortcut - something like smb:// Yada Yada .. "tmp" something or other...

I changed it to smb://wdmycloud and I think it's safe to say it's working quicker to access files. Not sure why I had used that other address, but I suspect it was slowing down the accessing of files for literally years.

Hope this does the trick!

Thank You!
