New iPad interrupted during software update, now only shows HELLO screen

My bro is in medical rehab and I bought him a new iPad 10th generation to replace his old one with a smashed screen. It’s the first time he’s ever had a major medical problem, so I wanted to help him.

I used the Quick Start which I’ve done in the past with other devices. Then the new iPad said it needed to do a software update. I okayed it and then after about an hour it still showed the preparing (or installing, don’t remember..exhausted) and so I shut both machines off. The old one shut off but the new one tried to restart and I held the top button down till the Apple logo came on.

The “Hello” screen came on and when I swiped up, I could see the ghost of the passcode page, but it disappears behind the hello page every time.

Any ideas? Some places said connect to a computer, but the instructions are a little alarming to me, now that I’m retired and don’t use desktops anymore.

thanks!

In interrupting the setup process, you may have "bricked" the iPad.

Given your circumstances, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to provide hands-on assistance:
