How many more years will the MacBook Pro M1 Pro (2021) support new Xcode versions?

I’m currently using a MacBook Pro M1 Pro (2021) for iOS development, and I’m wondering how long it will keep supporting new versions of Xcode and macOS updates.

From what I’ve found:

  • Apple usually provides full macOS updates for about 5–7 years after a Mac model is released or discontinued.
  • After that, there are typically 1–2 extra years of security updates, but major macOS versions (required for the latest Xcode) may no longer be available.
  • Since the M1 Pro MacBook Pro came out in 2021, it’s expected to receive major macOS and Xcode support until around 2027–2028.

That means developers can probably use this machine for about 4–6 more years (from 2025) before it stops supporting the newest versions of Xcode and iOS SDKs.

According to MacTracker, Apple discontinued the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros in January 2023. (That was when the M2 Pro and M2 Max models came out.)

Five years from January 2023 would be January 2028.

However, Apple doesn't release compatibility lists for future versions of macOS five years in advance. We may not know exactly how many new macOS releases the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros will receive, until the day that Apple posts a public Preview page for the first version that won't run on them.

On the average Macs get 6.6 years of macOS upgrades, older models only receiving another year or two of security updates and bug fixes.
