iPad OS 26 how to switch between apps without using split view?

appA is open; I want to go simply to appB. In v18.6 and earlier, I could toss appA up and off the screen, revealing the desktop, where I could easily select appB. Now it seems there’s a 3 step process to get a view of the desktop. If I use the little lower right corner handle to make appA less than full screen, the desktop app icons are not “underneath” the open appA… just some bland blank background. Is there a simpler way to change between apps without using the split screen feature?

You can swipe from the bottom of the screen up to close an app and return to the Home Screen with all your apps.

Not sure what background you are seeing otherwise, perhaps you are holding the swipe too long and seeing the App switcher. You don't need to keep your finger on the screen while you swipe, you can swipe and release pretty much immediately to close the app.
