Can't send mail from mac

I can send/receive mail from iPhone, iPad and iCloud Mail (I use Safari). I can receive mail in the mail app on my Mac. However it won't send. When I hit the blue circle with the white up arrow to send it turns red and hangs. Mail was working previously. I need help figuring out how to restore sending mail from the macOS app.
