I Need Help, I Cannot Upgrade My MacOS

I need help on upgrading my MacOS

I forgot to update my MacOS for a while (it is on MacOS 10.17.1 Catalina) and I cannot update my MacOS anymore. Every time I try to update, it show the loading screen (the black screen with the Apple logo and the progress bar at the bottom), the whole bar is filled, the computer is restart but the MacOS stay the same.

I tried to bring it to Apple and they said they don't know. They said they tried to reset some hardware and told me to wait for 2 weeks and try again before bringing it back.

Thank you for any input.

Which MacBook Air do you have? (See About This Mac in the Apple () menu.). That will determine whether you can upgrade past Catalina, and if so, how far.

(If your MacBook Air is a 2012 model, Catalina is as far as it can go. I assume that 10.17.1 is a typo, since the latest release of Catalina is 10.15.7.)
