Potential Workarounds and Checks
Since this is likely a bug, permanent fixes will depend on a future macOS update, but some users have found temporary workarounds:
- Manually Apply Rules: Many users report that while rules don't apply automatically, they do work when manually triggered.
- Select the messages you want the rules to process (e.g., in your inbox).
- In the Mail menu bar, go to Message > Apply Rules (or use the shortcut Option + Command+ L
- Check Rule Configuration (Especially for 'Move Message'):
- Some users with Gmail accounts noted that the "Move Message" action might only be labeling the email and not actually moving it out of the Inbox, especially if they are using IMAP. This is sometimes due to how Mail interacts with the non-standard way Gmail handles folders (using labels).
- Verify the destination mailbox for your rule. A common fix in past issues was to open the rule, click on the destination mailbox dropdown, and re-select the correct mailbox, even if it already appears correct, and then click OK. This seems to re-establish the connection.
- Check Rule Order and Conflicts:
- Mail rules are applied in the order they appear in the list.3 Ensure rules are ordered correctly.
Check if an earlier rule has the action "Stop Evaluating Rules". If so, messages processed by that rule will not be checked by any subsequent rules.
