Can't erase my old iMac before recycling

I can't wipe my old iMac after transferring what I need to my new one. I've tried Option-Command-R on start up, but once the globe has finished spinning, the erase option on disk utilitiies is greyed out.

It's an old machine, circa 2011, running on macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

hmm that's weird. If you have successfully booted to Internet Recovery, you should be able to nuke the whole internal disk (choose View > Show All Devices and erase the topmost device (not volumes under it) as APFS (SSD) or MacOS Extended (HDD) with GUID partition scheme).

But before doing that, make an external bootable macOS installer or a bootable external drive while you still can boot. After nuking the internal disk that is more difficult.
