Proposal to Optimize Navigation Gestures for Improved Ergonomics and Safety

Problem Description:

The current implementation of gesture control presents several ergonomic inconveniences that negatively impact usability and even safety.

  1. Inconvenience of "Top-to-Bottom" and "Bottom-to-Top" Gestures:
    • Problem: To execute gestures requiring a swipe from the very edge of the screen (e.g., to open the notification panel or control center), the user is forced to stretch their finger unnaturally towards the top or bottom bezel of the device. This is particularly inconvenient when using a smartphone with one hand.
  1. Problem with the "Right-to-Left" Swipe for Notifications:
    • Problem: The "right-to-left" swipe gesture for dismissing notifications is mechanically unsafe. When holding the phone in the right hand, performing this gesture relaxes one's grip, as the finger moves away from the palm. This creates a real risk of dropping the device.
    • Proposal: Add an alternative "left-to-right" swipe gesture for the same actions (dismissing notifications). Moving the finger towards oneself (towards the palm) is a more natural motion and securely stabilizes the device in hand.
  1. Limited Gesture Zone:
    • Problem: Critical gestures are confined to the very edges of the screen, while a vast area of the display remains unused for this purpose.
    • Proposal: Expand the recognition zone for "top-to-bottom" and "bottom-to-top" gestures across the entire screen area, similar to how it is already implemented for opening the side menu from the left edge. This would allow users to perform actions without having to reach for the physical boundaries of the display.

Summary:

The proposed changes (adding a "left-to-right" gesture and expanding the gesture zones) would significantly improve ergonomics, making one-handed operation more intuitive, comfortable, and safe.
