Macbook trackpad pointer stops moving for a short time after clicking or releasing

Whenever I start moving my finger on the trackpad and press it to click in the motion, the mouse pointer completely stops and slowly accelerates back to original speed while holding LBM. Similarly when releasing the trackpad while moving (I don't lose contact).

Expected: pointer movement to be decoupled from clicking (the cursor should not change speed except because of finger slowing down due to increased friction).

On any other operating system this works smoothly.

How can I disable this annoying behavior?

Note:

When I only use an external mouse everything works as expected.

When I use trackpad to move and mouse to click or vice-versa, the experience is smooth.

The issue only occurs when moving and clicking with the trackpad.
