What can I safely clean my iMac screen with?

While the Apple cleaning cloth works most of the time, occasionally I get small spots of whatever stuck to the screen. I hate to use anything like eyeglass lens cleaner on the screen without knowing if it is safe.

On a semi related question, what do you clean your iMac keyboard keys with? I honestly don't know if these are built to handle a damp cloth.

Exactly... that's why I bought the overpriced Apple cleaning cloth a few years ago instead of using a rag from the garage (haha).

The instructions do indicate a microfiber cleaning cloth is perfectly ok too. Even a "soft, lint-free cloth" is fine — the one notable exception being the nano-texture glass SoC mentioned.

As much as I prefer genuine Apple products $19 is a bit steep for something you can occasionally find for a dollar.

Glad you asked. It's quite disheartening when people come here asking what to do after they used a common household cleaning solution that permanently etched their beautiful display glass, or ruined their keyboard, or corroded the aluminum case, or any number of other outcomes from simple common sense cleaning routines yet are specifically proscribed by Apple. The answers are never what they want to hear. Most of the time, people don't even bother to reply. Nobody likes bad news.
