How do I get itunes to recognize my ipod shuffle 5th generation

I am unable to download any songs from itunes to my ipod shuffle. When I open itunes with my shuffle connected to my pc it does not recognize the device and I am unable to sync the songs

Did you download iTunes from the Windows Store? I've heard that if you download an older version from outside of the store it comes with the missing iPod drivers that the Windows Store version doesn't include.
