MacBook Pro slow/nonresponsive. Attempted restart and it is now hung about halfway on the white line under the apple symbol for the last 20 minutes.
I am concerned it is attempting an update but no notice was given prior to the shutdown

if you did not approve it, it is unlikely to be doing a major software update.
But it might have lost disk integrity. You can use this procedure to attempt a repair using Disk First Aid in Disk Utility:
