MacBook mirroring disabled, unable to turn back on

Trying to use a second monitor. I accidentally clicked “disable” under the screen mirroring settings, and now my screen only shows black. The screen knows something is plugged in, but the Mac won’t see it. I’ve tried cmnd+f1, I’ve tried Detect Displays, I’ve tried restarting. Nothing seems to reenable the setting.
