Since version 26.0.1 on Sequoia 15.7.1, my bookmarks sidebar is completely changed, with bigger icons, and folder icons. No inline folder toggle anymore. I hate it.
And the biggest problem of all. I can't rearrange the bookmarks (folders). When I go to the Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks menu. Those changes and sorting order, doesn't update in the sidebar.

I found out what's happening here, by running a virtual machine with Tahoe:
On Sequoia there is no sorting button.
On Tahoe we have now a sorting button for the sidebar.
And turning off the Show Folders on Top apparently brings back the toggle list. Weird.
15.7.1 provides what I would call a half finished version of Safari that does not have the '...'
I found the solution was to go ahead and upgrade to OS26. Now I have a the '...' and was able to make the icons 'compact' and also untick 'show folders on top' which makes it almost the same as before.
Of course the downside is I now have a laptop that is basically a large phone.

when I first tried, it didn't work for me either. it turns out that I needed to grant Terminal full disk access in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access. after I did that, the commands were able to run.

I have always used the apple menu to access my bookmarks. I only ever opened my sidebar to rearrange them. (drag and drop) but since upgrading to safari 26, I could no longer use the sidebar to rearrange bookmarks. then I was pointed to "edit bookmarks" from the apple menu, where I CAN still drag and drop. and this is a sequoia problem. apparently on Tahoe, it's not all that difficult to set it up where drag and drop works in the sidebar.
so basically, to me, the safari sidebar is now obsolete. :)
Why has Apple messed up something that has always worked well - simple nested folders for bookmarks that can easily be rearranged by drag and drop. I will stop using Safari after maybe 20 years or more because of this.
Does anyone know of a terminal command that will turn off the ugly folder previews in the nested bookmarks sidebar? The new format is very hard to navigate as each folder displays differently and this previously elegant and simple nested folder layout now looks confusing and messy. Why do Apple keep having to mess up things that worked well?
Although the Terminal fix allows me to drag and drop bookmarks in the sidebar, it is very slow and buggy. This must be the worst ever Safari update from Apple. I'll move to another browser if the bookmarks aren't made to work properly like any other browser. Pity as it makes it more difficult to sync with my iPhone...

Terminal commands worked for me though. Safari version 26.0.1 on Sequoia 15.7.1.
Make sure to quit Safari first before running the commands.
Great, this worked perfectly for me. I now have all my bookmarks back in collapsible folders, in their correct order. I hope Apple doesn't break it again with the next Safari version
