HELP! Wrist Detection issues after watchOS 26 update. Needs passcode CONSTANTLY!

Is anyone else having this issue? It's driving me mad!

I've had Apple Watches since their first and I've seen this happen on new major releases several times over the years but this time is really bad. So bad the watch is basically useless.

I grab the watch off the charger and put it on.

It asked for my passcode, which I enter, and lower my wrist.

The screen immediately goes black instead of dimming like it does when the watch is authenticated, and that's that. It's logged me out. If I raise my wrist again the screen comes on and asks for my passcode.

It doesn't do this 100% of the time but it's close. Maybe 85% of the time.

I played with tightening and loosening my many watch bands, and for a day or so after the 26.0.2 update it seemed like it improved a little...

Generally when I update to a new major release wrist detection will be touchy but it always seemed to be resolved by the next update.

When I updated to 26.0.2 and was still having the issue, I reset my watch completely and restored it.

Nothing helps.

I spend so much time entering my passcode I've decided not to wear it anymore, and to make sure my phone is always with me.

NOTE: I do have a tattoo where the watch sits on my wrist but I've always had it and all my watches have always worked fine.

Welp! That fixed it. As per Ingo2711's initial reply, whipping out the watch and NOT restoring it from backup was the trick! Thank you Ingo2711! Sincerely appreciate the time and catch on the backup containing the problem.

Note: When you're unpairing your watch you can keep your cellular stuff when asked. I think you can also save any watch faces before you start the process. The new watch face setup is kinda "meh" as they don't start you off with recommendations for complications like they did in the good old days. You have to build the entire face from scratch now? Anyway - I wish I'd backed those up beforehand. LOL!

Other than that, it was smooth as silk and the watch works as it did before the 26 update.

Hope everyone else experiences the same.

To rule out a software issue inside your backup data, erase the watch and pair it again, setting it up as a new device. You will only lose your created Watch faces and may have to activate the cards in your Wallet app again.

Then test the wrist detection again.

Wrist detection broken after WatchOS26 up… - Apple Community

I did all the gyrations of a hard reset (didn’t work), resetting and restoring (didn’t work), resetting and setting up new (did work but for only about a half day). As mentioned above, support already verified that all sensors are working as expected. So, sure seems like a software bug that we’ll have to wait for a fix on.
