Just because the phone's wifi icon shows "on" only means your router (wireless access point) is still trying to broadcast. We see that when our ISP has issues. A car wreck disables a utility pole and your router gets no signal until the repair guys fix the pole and lines.
An easy way to check it to use fast.com, NetFlix's internet speed gauge, to see if that shows a speed. If it shows zero, your phone and wireless router are fine but your ISP is having a bad hair day.
