trying to access my old Apple account

Well, I tried to get into my Apple account and it was locked, I guess because I haven’t been into it for the past 10 years. I gave the correct email and password and they unlocked it. Now they want to do a 2-step verification to make sure it’s me. They gave me a couple of questions to answer. Oops, they said that I gave incorrect answers and to be honest I am not sure what I gave when I opened the account some 15 years ago or better. Since I have no other trusted means to do this verification (wasn’t an issue 10 years ago) they don’t offer any other method to verify me. Any ideas?

If you created it 15 years ago then back then there were no trusted devices, you were using security questions. Unfortunately by not having taken those seriously you may have jeopardized your account which, frankly, I am surprised it is still around if you haven't been using it.

Legal - iCloud - Apple

VII. B "In addition, Apple may terminate your Account upon 30 days’ prior notice via email to the address associated with your Account if (a) your Account has been inactive for one (1) year; or (b) there is a general discontinuance of the Service or any part thereof."

Now Apple will only help you transition to Two-factor authentication for Apple Account - Apple Support

You have to prove to Apple's satisfaction that you are the account owner. To do that you have to be able to provide some kind of information to which only the true account owner would have access. If you can't do that then the account is lost.
