How can I update my Mac from macOS Catalina 10.15.7 to newer version?

As asked by previous posters: how can I upgrade my macOS Catalina 10.15.7? Do I really have to buy a new, very expensive, Apple desk top or laptop in order to be able to use a browser other than Google?

It depends on the exact model Mac you have. Over time, older Macs eventually become unsupported on some version of macOS.

Check Apple > About This Mac to see what model you have ... including the year. You can then check the compatibility list for each version of macOS:

FWIW, Firefox is still fully supported on Catalina and I suggest using it instead of Chrome.
