Apple TV+ trial activation problem on iPad with new Apple Account

About 6 months ago I purchased a new iPad which came with a 3 month Apple tv+ free trial. The trial has expired. I didn't really get much time to use it to be honest. I have now purchased a new tv which also came with a 3 month free trial of Apple tv+. It seems I am unable to activate this subscription on my iPad, although it does seem possible to do so through the tv itself and a new Apple ID.

I wondered whether there was any way I could use the new Apple ID on my iPad to utilise the free Apple tv+ on the iPad? At the moment I can't share the trial through Family Sharing as the new Apple ID is not associated with any Apple devices and it is such a shame to be unable to share the trial with one of my children who is away at university and would probably make more use of it tbh.
