Memory leak in News app on macOS Tahoe 26.0 crashes Mac Studio M4 Max

Hi,

I have had this issue since upgrading to macOS 26.0 - the News app literally kills my device after some time as there seem to be a significant memory leak that causes it. I first get a Force Quit pop up window showing a message that the apps memory has been used up and then all other apps start being put into (pause) mode. At one point I was unable to recover my device and had to do a hard reset by holding the power button. The news app has used over 386GB of memory! I took screen-shots, diagnostic logs, videos and submitted as feedback to apple not have not heard for more than 5 days now nor any status. It appears there's no ticketing system to report such critical bugs or at least I can't find one - why hide it from users?

Cheers,

David

When you click the (Send to Apple) Button after a panic, the report is sent anonymously, and there is no personally-identifiable information included for Apple to contact you, even if they wanted to. These reports are tabulated for statistical purposes.

If you want to create a tracked, formal Bug Report, that requires that you contact Apple support.

Consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. It changes NOTHING. Etrecheck was developed by a senior contributor here, and uses mostly system calls and simple tests to collect often-needed information.

it contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. it does not even need to be Installed. Because less can be learned when your Mac is running great, best time to run is when your problems are actually occurring, if possible.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the System ClipBoard, then Pasted into an ‘Additional Text’ window in a reply on the forums.

Use Etrecheck Pro for free:

http://Etrecheck.com

The amount of data you get can be daunting. If you POST your report, some Readers here are willing to look over those reports, and can provide valuable insights.

Then start a reply on the forums, click the "additional text" icon, and PASTE

I've used this feature before many times to report back to apple crashes etc. but this time it doesn't offer me to do it hence used feedback assistant instead and attached all reports + a video of the issue. I hoped 26.0.1 would have a patch but unfortunately when launch News app it continues cursor spin and starts clogging memory. In battery (UPS) it shows News app as the only that's sown as using significant energy.

Thank you but normally I don't install any third-party apps unless it's a well established and proven safe brand. Apple's "Feedback Assistant.app" which does the job and it's native. Also, their "Activity Monitor" shows CPU, mem, net and disk usage too.

I did reply to each message and this forum just adds my replies underneath all messages as opposed to under those I reply to - odd behaviour.

That is generally a good policy.

Etrecheck does not have to be installed and does not install anything. Etrecheck can be run right from the downloads folder, and deleted upon completion. Its developer is a Registered Apple Developer, whose works are subject to Apple's potential to revoke that certification for Bad Behavior. It is not a "risky" application in any way.

Thousands of Users here on the Apple forums have used it to discover things about the way their Macs operate that were not obvious with other tools.

Etrecheck used to be available in the Mac App Store, but Apple changed their rules in a way that meant far less information could be reported, so the developer made the decision to keep its strong capabilities and no longer feature it through the Mac App Store.
