tried using recovery and botched it. please help

I bought a MacBook (used) 2016 MacBook pro I believe with an intel chip inside. think I erased pertinent files to manage a complete reinstall of the OS. reason I say that is because I tried using the reinstall mac OS Monterey but the server couldn't be contacted and it wont even remotely boot up correctly. I saw it working on the store selling floor, so I know it works I just don't know what I did to it.
