Mid-2007 iMac boots on Black Screen without Keyboard input

I recently got a Mid-2007 iMac, the previous owner wiped the drive so it currently does not have MacOS.

I plugged it in today and it did nothing but spin the DVD drive and cackle the HDD inside. the screen remained black, looking at it with a flashlight didnt help. Removing either stick of ram didnt help besides that the iMac plays the Boot Chime now. I plugged in a USB apple keyboard but the capslock and numlock keys didnt light up (i tried with different keyboards), but the mouse i plugged in sort of worked (the laser lit up but it was unresponsive..because i couldnt see!) the dvd drive spins very hard every now and then when its powered on but besides that, no signs of life. What can i do??

Your almost 20 year old iMac is likely dead. It cannot run current OS's, applications or peripherals. It has zero value except for a curiosity. DO NOT spend any money on it. My strong recommendation is to recycle it at no cost using one of Apple Recycling Programs.

If you want an iMac at a low price that works and can be used, I'd recommend buying one from a reputable source such as Macsales.com. It is not wise to get a used Mac from:

  • Ebay
  • Amazon
  • Craigslist
  • Nexdoor classifies
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Local PC Store
  • Friend, neighbor, acquaint or a stranger.

Why, they are almost always not setup per Apple's instructions inWhat to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac. This means they are door stops and cannot be used as they were not disassociated with the previous owner. Please be wise when getting a used Mac!!!

It sounds like this iMac may have a hardware issue. It seems you may have discovered one when you were changing memory sticks around. Is the one memory stick definitely bad....that is will it cause problems whenever it is installed by itself in any of the slots? If not, then it indicates a memory slot issue or perhaps worse.....a bus or CPU issue (aka Logic Board failure).

It would not surprise me if the Power Supply is bad. That was a very common problem back in the day....usually with swollen and/or leaving capacitor.

If the original Hard Drive is still installed, then that is another possible item which could be causing problems which can prevent booting completely (even the blinking folder with question mark).

You need to learn how to troubleshoot & repair hardware issues. The Apple forum is not the ideal place for such a discussion especially if you have no hardware troubleshooting background (you seem to have a little with that memory swap, but not enough to search further). There are other sites where there is actual hardware troubleshooting assistance, documentation, & information, including the Apple Service Guide for that iMac. Unfortunately the forum moderators will remove any links to such sites.

FYI, whenever you buy used equipment, you are always buying someone else's problem.

Power Supply & internal Hard Drive are the two most common failures on the 2007-2009 iMacs. Memory failures are also possible, but memory compatibility issues are an issue if third party memory has been installed since Macs are very particular about the memory they use. Memory from OWC is best these days, although memory from Crucial was fine if it was marked "For Mac" or "Mac Compatible".....anything else from Crucial was likely to cause problems.

Good luck.

The 2007 iMac originally came with a OS X 10.4.10 Gray Install Disc set.

To reinstall the OS X, you need the original Install Disc set for that iMac or a later Retail Upgrade. Those later Retail Upgrade versions were Leopard or Snow Leopard on a DVD and Lion on a Flash Drive.

Then from there you can use a web browser to get a later on-line OS X or macOS version.
