Issues with Apple Music after upgrading my Mac to macOS Tahoe

The change to the interface is too extreme and in many cases, not at all an improvement. Maybe I'm just not using it correctly!

Here's a list of the problems/issues I'm having:

  • No playlist song count appears in playlist interface. (Of course, you can scroll down to see the numbered list count, but I rely on simply looking at the interface to see it.)
  • Sound Check is either broken or useless. Song volumes are all over the place, with it turned on or off.
  • The History/Up Next panel now behaves as in the mobile version of the app. You can no longer switch between Up Next and History; you have to scroll up through history and/or down through up next.
  • "Show in Playlist" is no longer available in the history panel.
  • The currently playing song controls (besides moving to the bottom of the screen), no longer allow you to remove a playing song from the current playlist; you have to go into the playlist to remove it.
  • Those song controls being at the bottom is hard to accept after it being at the top forever, especially that now there's a bunch of wasted empty space above the song list.
  • Pressing the space bar doesn't always start and stop a song.

More to come, I'm afraid.

I'll add to your list (if you don't mind)...

  • Shuffle always plays the very first song in the list before actually shuffling.
  • The Play button is slow to respond. Takes 8 to 10 seconds to start playing after pressing it. I have a large library of 40,000 songs. That may have something to do with it, but the previous version started immediately.
  • In the Home section, Recently Played doesn't reflect what was recently played on my MacBook Air. Seems to update correctly from iOS and HomePods.
  • The History/Continue Playing (Up Next) panel is too narrow and can't be expanded. It can only be opened or closed with a left/right scroll.
  • The Shuffle button doesn't engage from a fresh start of the Music app. You have to hit Play first, then you can select Shuffle. Once it's on, it seems to stay on as expected.

Thanks for letting me hijack...

The interface in Tahoe is worse than it already was. Some extra remarks on Tahoe Music:

  • The huge unused blank space is still a waste and very un-Apple.
  • Playlists in the left side bar spring open all of a sudden.
  • The total time of a playlist is now only in minutes. I need the seconds back when preparing my radio casts.
  • The total time of a playlist disappeared, and re-appeared somewhere above, in the empty space. Why?!
  • The player controls made a unnecessary move to the bottom, enlarging the already useless empty space.
  • The player controls are worse in checking the position of the playhead.
  • Changing the volume was one click, now two.
  • Still missing is the possibilty to set a default song view.

Happy to add to this ever-growing list (how does a company as large as Apple not have someone properly testing these changes before pushing them out to customers?).

  • The Music app doesn't honor any cuts at the beginning of a song (it does continue to honor them at the end of the song, though).
  • The player (at the bottom of the screen) displays the original length of a song rather than displaying the "cut" length of a song (previously, it displayed the "new" length, reflective of all cuts).
  • Playlist folders randomly expand and collapse when seemingly unrelated actions are taken.
  • (And even though stated in the original, I'm restating it here because it affects the quality of the music being played) Sound volumes fluctuate as music is being played, with or without Sound Check being ticked.

Is anyone else having problems with the “Play next” and “Add to queue” functions? I’m finding that the song that gets added often bears no correlation to the one I actually clicked on. It might be from the same playlist (sometimes), but it often takes several attempts before the one I actually wanted gets added to the playlist.

This is in sharp contrast to the Music app on my iPhone 15/iOS 18.6.2, which does these things accurately and without fuss.

My theory: Apple have sacrificed developers on the altar of “cost saving” and now lack the in-house skills to get these things right.

I'm having issues with the Queue. I'll load a number of full albums and then at some point I'll realize that a different album is playing. Upon opening up the queue I'll see that my queued up albums were replaced with random albums that I had already played. Sometimes odd tracks are inserted in an album list of tracks. This happens every three or so days. I find that if I clear everything, history, queue, etc. then it seems to work OK. But it'll happen again in time. I only ever play full albums.

I turned off glass for Music because it wastes space and I hate the controls at the bottom of the screen rather than using the empty space at the top (who thought that was a good idea?!). But I still have the same frustrating issue of all folders opening at start up and when playlists are moved or other random actions. I have a lot of folders (a lot!!) so it is infuriating!
