Unable to Set Up Gmail in Safari

I just set up brand new Mac Air laptop and went through set up process. Now I am trying to add gmail account and every time I try, it gets stuck with the circling icon. I think it is in Safari but not sure exactly where the problem is because it will not allow me to enter email. It keeps circling like it is stuck. It keeps happening and I cannot proceed. Tried restarting laptop as well. Frustrating since this is supposed to be a brand new machine and I'm already having problems with it.
