Touch ID passkey doens't actually work despite settings

My touch ID on my macbook air works for unlocking the home screen but won't work for saving passwords. I am not running OS 17, and according to what I've found online it won't work until I update to that. However, in my settings it has an option to use touch ID for autofilling passwords. Why is this an option if it won't work?
