How can I disable Safari’s tab hover preview?

Is there a way to stop Safari from showing website previews when hovering over a tab? I found a blog suggesting the command below and ran it successfully, but it didn’t make any difference:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugDisableTabHoverPreview 1

I also don’t understand the reason for showing these tab hover previews, as they feel unnecessary and distracting.
