highlight text in Apple Books on iOS 26

I just bought a new iPad today because my old one is not updatable and it stopped highlighting after the last iOS update a few weeks ago (18.7.1). Just got a 2025 A16 iPad, iOS 26, and the exact same problem... so frustrating. A box surrounds ONE line with a dark line around it and no amount of tapping, swiping or scrolling will highlight anything. It is working on my computers and on my 18.6.2 iOS iPhone. Apple, where are you on this?? Here is what trying to highlight does:
