Re-numbering a Pages document for index and preface (i, ii, iii) and body (1, 2, 3)

Trying to re-number a document so that the index and preface is "i, ii, iii, iv, etc." and the actual body of work is "1, 2, 3, 4, etc." Is this possible in a single document in Apple's Pages? If so, how do I do that?

You will need two initial document sections to divide the page numbering scheme:

  1. In the first section where you want roman numerals, and where you have existing page numbers, select Documents > Section > Page Numbering format (choose lowercase roman) and start at 1.
  2. In the second section where you want regular page numbering, once again, you choose Documents > Section and uncheck Match Previous Section. Then set your Page Numbering format to 1,2,3… and Start at 1.
  3. Subsequent sections after your Section 2 will receive the normal ascending page numbers in the same style as the previous section with normal numbering. No need to visit Documents > Section.
