I just recently updated from macOS Sonoma 14.7.8 to 14.8 and Safari from Version 16 to 26 and now I can't shut my tabs where if I click the X nothing happens. Also when I am in the address bar it doesn't let me click on it where I can't change the webpage. Is anyone else having the same issue? Please advise?

Under Settings - Tabs - Tab Layout: Switch from "Compact" to "Separate". This fixed the issue on my end.
Excellent - worked for me too. Doesn't solve the problem, but a good workaround!
Update caused the address bar on Safari to to not accept typing. Switching settings as suggested by Viny above fixed issue. Thank you.
