iCloud Photos not uploading after upgrading to iPhone 16 Pro

Hey guys!

I came across a problem, where after upgrading from an iPhone 13 to an iPhone 16 Pro last November, my photos stopped uploading to iCloud and freeing up my space.

The problem started on the exact day i took my first photo with the new phone. It says it’s not uploaded to iCloud at every photo since then, and i found out when i ran out of space.

I have a family plan of 2TB of iCloud storage, with 800GB still free. Any ideas? Thanks!

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18

Hey!

That definitely sounds frustrating. Since you’ve got plenty of space left in your iCloud plan, it’s most likely a settings or syncing issue rather than storage. A few things you can check:

  1. iCloud Photos toggle – Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and make sure “iCloud Photos” (sometimes called “Sync this iPhone”) is turned on.
  2. Optimize storage vs. download originals – Double-check that Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled if you want photos to free up space automatically.
  3. Wi-Fi and power – Photos often only upload when connected to Wi-Fi and power, especially for large libraries. Try plugging your phone in overnight with Wi-Fi on.
  4. Check iCloud status – Sometimes uploads pause if there’s a hiccup with iCloud services. You can check Apple’s System Status page to be sure.
  5. Restart & sign out/in – A restart can help. If nothing changes, signing out of iCloud and back in (Settings > [your name] > Sign Out) often forces a fresh sync, but make sure everything is backed up before doing this.

If none of that works, it may be worth contacting Apple Support directly since the problem started exactly when you moved to the iPhone 16 Pro—it could be a migration glitch tied to your account.
