As long as you're buying it from Apple, that's a reasonable choice for those uses. The extra storage over the base model will come in handy. Apple did increase the base memory from 8 GB to 16 GB after the M2 model, but macOS manages memory very well.
Buying used/refurbished from vendors other than Apple is very risky, and many people who do so end up not getting a good deal on a Mac but rather getting a very bad deal on an expensive paperweight (typically due to being sold a stolen Mac with either Activation Lock or an MDM profile meaning they cannot use/administer the Mac).

That would depend on the definition of "basic schoolwork". If "basic schoolwork" involves Windows-only apps then no you should not get it. If "basic schoolwork" involves creating reports using only Windows compatible products then you should not get it. Check with the school to determine which computer is most suitable for your course of study.
And your statement "no software or anything" would lead me to believe you do not need a computer for school. Why would you need a computer for not doing "anything"?
like no heavy software that requires either one, just basic tabs (mostly google stuff like docs)
