How to use AirPods Pro for real-time translation during a Japanese lecture?

I can't figure out how to use translate as I wish to.

Here's a sample scenario. I'm at a lecture where the lecturer speaks Japanese. I'd like to hear his speech through my AirPod Pros (3s are on order) in English. I don't need a transcription.

It seems simple to me to setup but the Apple 'app' hits me as incomprehensible.

I'd like to choose a 'From' and 'To' language and then using an option buttons have the system expect verbal or written input/output. If the Apple system isn't capable of that, please suggest one that is.

I have both an iPhone 17 Pro and AirPods Pro 3s on order if that helps. Thanks for any suggestions.

  1. Live Translation with AirPods works on AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware when paired with an Apple Intelligence–enabled iPhone running iOS 26 and later. Supports English (UK, U.S.), French (France), German, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain). For more information, see Feature Availability.
