step1: select file
step2: drag into a new /different folder
step3: check folder contents.

It's into a window on Firefox, which accepts the file but leaves the original file in place in Finder. It would be nice to have a choice offered then to delete the original file or leave it unchanged?

Refer to posting by @VikingOSX in link
Is there a move to option in finder for f… - Apple Community
Specifically
" Select a file and copy it to the clipboard with cmd+C. At your move destination folder, press the option key and cmd+V and the file is moved.
You can visualize this by selecting the file in the Finder, and on the Finder's secondary menu, you can select Copy, and at the move destination, again reveal the Finder secondary menu and you will see Paste Item. When you press the option key, that menu item changes to Move item here. "
Is the new location on a different volume? If so that's normal.
Ah, thanks for the pointer!

That's not a folder or location. It's an instruction to upload.
