Hi Richard (And Old Toad) - Success! Here's what happened:
The original file was a 16.4 MB scan of a black and white original dating from around 1900 made on a Canon MG8200 scanner/printer. The problem was a refusal to export the modified original from Photos as a jpeg with the response being "Unknown Error (0) and says the operation failed to create a file for the photograph”.
Restarting did not help.
Restarting in Safe Mode did not help.
Exporting from a different library worked just fine.
Rebuilding the library giving the problem did not help.
Creating a New User did not help although it was a bit easier than you suggested owing to the fact that the original photo is on an external hard drive that any user can access.
Consequently, I got methodical about the export specifications while I was in New User space and, once I found something that worked, varied different parameters to see what did and did not work and then returned to my Normal user space and repeated the variables with the same result.
The PROBLEM was specifying in the Export window the “Original” color profile – that leads to the "Unknown Error (0) and says the operation failed to create a file for the photograph” response. Any of the other options worked although with lightly different file size results. Specifying the “Most Compatible” color profile option (which is the first variation that “worked” for me) results in the use of the sRGB profile.
What probably confused me was that, since it was a B/W photo, “Original” rather that anything with RGB in it seemed logical. Guess NOT!
Anyway thanks for your suggestions which served to get me into serious analysis mode (which is what it really takes).
Cheers, Dan
