How to manage iMessage data and documents after enabling iCloud sync?

My iMessage data and document have recently skyrocketed to 7gb. It usually is at like less than a gb. I had recently turned on sync iMessage in iCloud and Now my data and documents are at 7gb so I assume maybe this has something to do with it. All of my documents on iMessage add up to less than a gb. I am so confused on how it is taking up so much.
