If you already have a T-Mobile or Metro by T-Mobile SIM and want to keep using it with the same number, you should choose “Connect to carrier later / SIM-free” when buying from Apple.

Otherwise, if you pick T-Mobile at checkout, Apple (through their carrier activation system) will usually ship the iPhone with a new T-Mobile SIM and a new number. That’s great if you’re opening a new line, but not if you just want to swap your current SIM into the new iPhone.

Metro (formerly MetroPCS, now called Metro by T-Mobile) is actually a prepaid carrier brand owned by T-Mobile. So, while Metro customers use the same T-Mobile network, they’re not technically the same as a regular T-Mobile (postpaid) customer.

When you’re buying an iPhone online from Apple:

  • If Apple asks you to choose a carrier, “T-Mobile” usually refers to the main (postpaid) T-Mobile service.
  • Metro by T-Mobile customers should normally choose the “Connect to carrier later / SIM-free” option (unlocked) instead of T-Mobile, unless Apple explicitly lists Metro as a carrier.

That way, you’ll get an unlocked iPhone, and you can just insert your Metro SIM card and it will work on T-Mobile’s network without any problem.
