Certain songs will not play in Apple Music Web Player

I recently activated an Apple Music subscription and used the Apple Music app on my Windows 10 computer to sync my iTunes library to the Apple Cloud. That process seemed to complete successfully as I can now see all my songs/albums/playlists in the Apple Music Web Player. But, there are certain songs that will not play using the Web Player.

If I try to play the song on its own, the Web Player will stall/hang. No error message is displayed.

If I try to play the song as part of a list, once the attempt to transition to that song is made, the Web Player will show a pop-up saying:

"An Error Occured

Something went wrong. Please refresh the page and try again."

No error code is displayed.

This is true if I use the Apple Music Web Player in Chrome or Edge. I've also tried the same process on another computer with the same results. The same songs will not play in the Web Player.

Also, I tried the Web Player on my Galaxy S20+. No pop-up is displayed, but the Web Player hang/stalls with the same songs.

However, I can play those songs through the Apple Music app on my computer and phone.

In each of the conditions I described, I was signed in on only one browser or app at a time. (No multiple sign ins.)

So, any ideas why certain songs will not play in the Web Player?

Thanks!

I tried this for 1 file and it seemed to work:

  1. Log out of all browsers and Apple Music apps.
  2. Close all Apple Music apps.
  3. On the computer that holds the music file, sign into the Apple Music app.
  4. Go to Settings->General and turn off "Sync library".
  5. Go to Library->Songs and find the song that will not play.
  6. Click on the "More" button (the 3 dots to the right of the song) and hover over "Show in Playlist" (if available). (Note the playlist(s) this song belongs to as it may need to be re-added later.)
  7. Sign out of Apple Music app.
  8. On a phone, open the Apple Music app and sign in.
  9. Go to Library->Songs and find the song that will not play.
  10. Press on the song and a pop-up window will appear.
  11. Select "Delete from Library" and confirm.
  12. Sign out of Apple Music app and close app on the phone.
  13. On the computer that holds the music file, sign into the Apple Music app.
  14. Verify the song is still in the aforementioned playlists. If it is not, re-add it.
  15. Go to Settings->General and turn on "Sync library". The library on the computer should start syncing with the cloud library.
  16. Once the sync has completed, sign out the app then sign back into the app again. This will cause a re-syncing process to start again. Once that process is complete, sign out of the app on the computer.
  17. Open your favorite web browser and head to the Apple Music Web Player.
  18. Sign into the Web Player and attempt to play the song. (I recommend to go to Library->Songs, finding the song just before the one in question and play it. Once it completes, the song you just deleted earlier should begin to play.)

This was the process I had to perform just to get 1 song to play. It looks like I have lots of songs that are in this state.

TT2, let me know if you think I missed a step.

I wonder if there's a way to delete the entire contents of the cloud library and have the computer's library reloaded.

Assuming you have the source of one of these problem tracks stored locally on your computer (ideally backed up too) then you could attempt to remove it from your cloud library using your phone. It will get a Cloud Status of Removed on the computer. You can then Right click > add to library to get it to be matched or uploaded once more. If this fixes the track in question you could rinse and repeat.

That sounds like a potential solution and would resolve the issue if the file had been corrupted when loaded to the cloud. But, if the file had been corrupted, why would it play in the Apple Music app running on my phone (not where the physical file is), but it won't play in the Apple Music Web Player (on any computer/phone/browser)?

Curious.

Anyway, thanks for the potential solution!

I'll give a try in a bit and report back.

This library is a mix of files purchased through iTunes and uploaded CDs.

There were no songs on the phone I used when I started. In fact, I had to install the Apple Music app on my phone to test a clean scenario.

Some of the songs are in playlists and some are not. I did find an album with only 3 songs and none of those songs would play in the Web Player.

I couldn't find a common thread between them.
