iPhone 15 Pro Max camera screen too dark before taking photos

I have an iPhone 15 pro max with iOS 18.6.2

Recently (days) when I take photos, the camera screen is significantly darker than the photo which it takes, even when the photo is viewed immediately after taking the shot.

is this a setting issue? What setting should I change to correct the brightness of the camera screen but not the overall brightness of the phone?

There is no separate display brightness setting exclusively for the Camera app on an iPhone. The brightness you see while using the camera is the same as your device’s overall display brightness. You can adjust brightness in multiple ways—for example, through Control Center, in Settings > Display & Brightness, or by enabling features like Auto-Brightnessand True Tone.

If you’d like detailed instructions on how to adjust brightness on your iPhone, you can refer to Apple’s official guide: Adjust the screen brightness and color on iPhone.

I tried to see if I could duplicate what you see on my iPhone and I couldn't. I'd try a Forced Restart on your phone --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

If this doesn't help and it happens with every photo you try to take, then it's time to schedule an appointment at your closest Apple Store Genius Bar and let Apple test your phone --> Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple
