Apple Pay credit not transferred to credit card after flight cancellation

I purchased airline ticket with Apple Pay. I had to cancel flight. Airline sent credit to Apple wallet but it never went to my credit card. The airline is saying call Apple Pay. Apple Pay support says they can’t do anything and to contact my bank. The bank says it never went to them so I need to contact Apple Pay. Help!?!

An airline (or ANY merchant) can’t credit your “wallet” …


… they can only credit the original payment method used. (presumably your bank card)


Apple has no part in either the execution of the original transaction or the refund.


There is no “Apple Pay” to call; there is only your card issuer.


Credits almost always take additional time.


But if you don’t see the credit within a reasonable period of time (e.g. 7-10 days), initiate a “dispute” w/ your card issuer.

Nope! The merchant does not send the refund to Apple. A refund always goes to the bank that was charged. When you made the purchase, you sent the merchant the token that your bank sent you when you added their card. That is what is used to process the refund where it will be posted to your bank and Apple is not involved in the refund at all.


Jeff Donald is correct and you should follow the recommendation to get the ARN number from the Airlines so your bank can trace the refund. If you are interested in how Apple Pay works, I have seen Jeff post some very good information and diagrams that detail the process. At any rate, your question here has been answered and you now know what needs to be done to resolve the problem.

This is not accurate. Whoever told you that is misinformed or you misunderstood what was being said.


You are correct that the merchant does not know the Payment Network Operator when a transaction is initiated. The merchant never needs to know. The transaction terminal/POS system is hard coded to send the encrypted token to the merchant’s credit card processor/gateway etc. The token may contain a BIN range or routing data and the token is automatically sent to the correct PNO. The PNO then forwards to your bank. Apple is not involved in the transaction.


Refunds work in a similar manner. The merchant processes the refund and the merchant’s processor routes the data to the PNO and then to the bank. The credit card processor debits funds from the merchant bank account and they are routed via the ACH network to the bank. Again, Apple is not involved.


You’re wasting your time with Apple. Contact the airline. Request the Acquirer Reference Number (ARN) for the refund. Give the ARN to your bank and request they trace the refund.

This isn’t exactly accurate. And that’s part of the challenge. The way it works is that my original bank information was not sent to the merchant. Apple sends an intermediate card. So from the merchant standpoint, for example they don’t see Visa in the numbers. What they see is an Apple payment. They credit that. Then Apple needs to send the info to the merchant.
