Creating a new project/timeline with photos and videos. Photos appear fine. Videos show up on the timeline as a green icon (no video content displayed) with the audio intact. Verified iMovie version is up-to-date.

Likely it is some sort of incompatibility problem. Try putting one of the video clips on your desktop, and then control click on its icon. In the pop-up menu that appears, scroll down toward the bottom and click on "encode selected video files". Follow the prompts in the boxes that appear to re-encode the movie clip. Re-encoding will create an additional new clip, but your original clip will remain as a separate clip. Now see if the re-encoded clip plays properly in iMovie.
