Apple Reminders widgets do not update in background

Trying to use Apple Reminders for all my tasks, but currently the widgets on my iPhone and iPad will only update after I open the Reminders app on the corresponding device.

The sync is definitely happening…opening the app on my iPhone immediately shows the items added on my iPad, and vice versa.

But the widgets on my devices home screens remain out-of-date until I launch the app. Which sorta/almost entirely defeats the purpose of widgets.

Any advice?
