Old photos replaced with newer iCloud photos

I wanted to have a look through my old iphone. I went onto camera roll and saw all my old photos which I started scrolling through. I clicked on ‘select’ to delete some random screenshots and suddenly they all disappear and the photos from my icloud start replacing them. Is there any way i can get those old photos back?

How did you save the photos to the old iPhone? Have they been taken with the iPhone and were still there, or have they been synced to the iPhone with iTunes or the Finder on a Mac?

I am asking, because synced photos will be erased from the iPhone, as soon as you enable iCloud on the iPhone, because the manual syncing and iCloud Photos cannot be used together.

On the other hand, if you have been using iCloud Photos on the iPhone all along, older photos may be erased, when you turn it on after a long time, when iCloud starts to update the library on the iPhone. The photos, that you deleted earlier on your other devices will also be erased from the old device to keep the photo libraries in sync and identical.
