MacBook Pro bought on ebay shows purchase date as April 1978

Bought a MacBook as Apple certified refurbished on ,eBay and when I checked the serial number, it says "MacBook Pro (16-inch, Nov 2023)

Purchase Date: April 1978

How is that possible for Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max...

Just means there is no warranty coverage. Without the coverage, the purchase date is not needed and there will be no information on when the device was actually purchased. The serial check is only for AppleCare coverage and nothing more.

Apple does not sell refurbished Macs on eBay, you bought it from a person making the claim that it is Apple certified refurbished. Just for clarification.

It comes with the sealed carton and all.

Return it. Carton seals are easy to fake. If you buy a used (or refurbished) Mac from someone other than Apple, there is a good chance the good deal you thought you were getting on a Mac is really a very bad deal on a paperweight. Many Macs sold by 3rd parties used are still subject Activation Lock or enrolled in an MDM, meaning they can be remotely bricked.

The following page is the only source for legitimately refurbished Macs of that specific designation:

Refurbished Mac - 2023 - 16-inch - MacBook Pro - Apple

I suppose it is possible for someone to purchase a refurbished Mac, not open it, and sell it on eBay at a loss instead of simply returning it to Apple for a full cash refund, but such a Mac would be considered used. Not refurbished.

It's not. Something is wrong, and I strongly recommend you return it in accordance with eBay's policies.

I was not aware that Apple sold Apple Certified Refurbished products on eBay. As far as I know, you order those from Apple directly, and they come with a one-year Apple warranty.

Could this be a Mac repaired or “refurbished” by an unauthorized third party? That might explain the purchase date, which seems to indicate that there is no Apple warranty coverage.
