Restoring my Mac Performance and eliminating or reducing Beach Balls

I have an older MacBook Pro - circa 2017, and

Currently, it is slowing down dramatically. I have removed large parts of the Storage from the included SSD and placed it on a connected NAS drive, but it does not seem to have helped. When using Word, the transition speeds and buffering make it hard to be productive. Is there a "cleaner" type software that might reclaim the disk space, and help reduce the Memory usage? Thanks !!

Remove the DuckDuckGo VPN, and remove the Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client add-on security app, and the remaining pieces of Little Snitch.

I'd likely temporarily disable OneDrive and DropBox for testing, as so e file system clients can get unexpectedly busy. Grammarly, too.

And yeah, the battery is failing.

Don't use any "cleaner" app. Most of them create more problems than they solve.

My suggestion is to download & run Etrecheck (it's free) and post its report here. It is a diagnostic utility written by one of the Apple Community's longstanding members. It is safe to use and does not reveal any personal information. It can be very helpful in figuring out what's going on with your Mac.

To post a copy of the report, use the "Additional Text" button:

Add-on cleaners and add-on security apps are why these messes too often get rolling, and that’s before we discuss the effects to security and privacy that too many of these add-ons can entail. Various of these add-ons are themselves all too reminiscent of being malware.

Here is the Symantec removal tool available at the Symantec (now Broadcom) website, and the directions for use from Symantec (Broadcom):

If that is not working, please let us know what happened with it, and what errors were reported.

Please note: I did not review the statistically-generated text that Google AI generated to determine whether the statistical next-word generator guessed its word-order into a wrong answer, or guessed words into a right answer. As a technical reference source, all AI hype aside, AI text is a perilous choice at best.

I have removed the remnants of Little Snitch and rebooted. I will test it, and then remove Grammarly and do the same. Finally, I will remove Duck Duck Go and test it. Hopefully, one of them will make a difference. Thanks for the input. I looked for the other recommendations for removal, but I am not sure how to do that, so I will proceed as I indicated. Thanks for the insight and help!

So far, the problem has not abated (I have removed the remnants of Little Snitch). I tried to use the link above, but it takes me to a Google AI screen, which it tells me I don't have it installed. I entered it in Google and it showed me lots of screen "cleaners" but one had instructions using manual means. I downloaded a file and tried to execute it and got a "Don't have Permission" reply. I did a "get info" on the file and my permissions appear OK. I have pasted the screen here. I must say this process is frustrating for sure. I see why people buy cleaners. If you can help me figure out how to proceed I would appreciate it. I highlighted the file name and the permissions
