Garmin Edge 840 not recognized in Finder

I just bought a Garmin Edge 840 to replace my old Edge 520, mainly because the memory is so small on the 520 it does not store all the maps I want. However the 840 is not recognized by Finder because Garmin is using a Media Transfer Protocol that Apple does not seem to support very well. Can Apple and Garmin not find a solution for this? Or is there some other workaround?
