Do I need to backup my iPhone before syncing with iPad?

If I sync all my iPad info to my iPhone, do I need to backup my iPhone. Of course I will backup my iPad. What I am after is to keep my iPhone up to date with syncing and not having to back it up.

Unless Apple has changed something recently I don't think you can sync an iPhone directly to an iPad. You do it either by syncing both to a computer or by using iCloud.
