External Hard drive to use with Mac Book Pro for photos/video downloads and storage

My MacBook is full and I need to download family videos that I recently had digitized from a website. In addition to that I need to scan in family photos as well. I want to put these on an external drive but I am uncertain what my best option is. Does anyone have any experience with this?
