Use Apple TV remote to turn on and off soundbar with IR

I have a soundbar which does not have HDMI. I need the Apple TV remote to turn on the soundbar when I use the power button on the remote, and same thing to turn off the soundbar when I turn off the Apple TV. Please tell me how to set this up. It should not be this difficult to get my Apple TV to work like the fire stick I just replaced, for which the setup was seamless. Thanks for any help.

the way it works is that the remote send the commands to the appletv box and the appletv box pass on the commands using the hdmi cable using hdmi-cec Consumer Electronics Control - Wikipedia

so it's sort of out of the appletv boxs "hands" if the tv do not support hdmi-cec or if it's disabled it will not respond to the commands, and if it does but the tv do not have a way to turn off it's soundbar then there is nothing you can do really

I appreciate your reply, however my soundbar which is not that old does not have HDMI.

I should not have to upgrade my entire home theatre setup to accommodate the Apple TV when IR technology is already built into the remote. The ON and OFF functions are simply locked behind Apple's software but they could easily make a menu change to allow for the use of the Apple TV remote to control TVs and soundbars entirely with IR.

The $40 Amazon fire stick does this without issue. Unbelievably frustrating.
