MacBook Pro M2/M3 Pro – Internal Display Goes Black

Hello,

I’m facing a recurring issue with my MacBook Pro M3 Pro (2023) running macOS Sequoia 15.6.1.

During regular development work with a secondary (external) monitor connected, the internal display (main screen) suddenly goes dim or turns completely black.

Even after disconnecting the external monitor, the internal display stays black/dim and does not return to normal until I restart the Mac.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Resetting NVRAM/SMC
  • Reinstalling macOS
  • Updating to the latest macOS build

Unfortunately, the issue still persists.

What’s more concerning is that I’ve observed the same problem on multiple MacBook Pro devices in my office (both M2 Pro and M3 Pro models) — at least 4 devices so far. This makes it seem like a broader issue rather than a one-off hardware defect.

Details:

  • Model: MacBook Pro M3 Pro (2023)
  • macOS: Sequoia 15.6.1
  • Setup: External monitor usually connected during work

I’ve attached an image of the issue for reference.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is Apple aware of this problem, and is there a known fix or workaround?

Thanks in advance.

That is weird, are your display settings set up correctly ?

If so, have you tried to boot the Mac in the safe mode to see if the issues persist? If they dont persist in the safe mode they are caused by an external piece of software I am afraid

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.
